Church of Sant’Antonio Abate
Paese di Ovedasso
St. Anthony Abbot Church in Ovedasso is located on the plateau at the edge of the village. It was already a chapelry and became a parish church in 1958.
Church of Sant’Antonio Abate
The church of Ovedasso, dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot, stands on the remains of an older place of worship.
The original site, consecrated on 13 June 1434, consisted of a single nave. Over the centuries, the building underwent numerous expansions and transformations. The choir was enlarged and the sacristy was added in 1703, the bell tower was erected in 1716 and in 1906 the construction work on the chapel of the Virgin
Mary was completed.
Since the second half of the 18th century, the churchyard has surrounded the church, giving it the appearance it retained until the violent earthquake of 1976, which severely damaged the whole site.
Over the following decade, the church was completely restored and consolidated. The work restored its original appearance, preserving the bell tower on the north side, albeit reduced in height, the sacristy, and some important interior furnishings: the marble altar, the statue of the Virgin Mary and the baptismal font.
Having become a subsidiary since 1986, the church is now incorporated into the parish of Moggio Udinese.
